Cover Crop Disaster — Every Way NOT to Plant Cover Crops
Normally on Giffin Farms in Obion County, Tenn., Hoyt Giffin and his family plant into standing, green cover crop in early May. This year they were rained out of the field from April 25th-June 13th. During that time, the cover crop completely matured and was blown down by an intense storm May 26th. They had never planted through anything like this before and after putting on what felt like endless combinations of row cleaners, coulters, disc openers and closing wheels, they took the planter to the field and went through the brutal process of finding every way NOT to plant cover crops. Finally, they identified the combination of equipment that would give them the best chance to get a good crop planted.
The 7 Freebies for All Farmers
In this presentation, Green Cover Seed co-founder Keith Berns discusses the benefits of cover crops and other regenerative farming practices as well as what he calls the “seven freebies for all farmers.” Berns says “When you buy a piece of land, you are buying all the minerals and nutrients that are in that soil.”
No-Till & Cover Crops Saved Their Farm
Frustrated by back-to-back years of drought, South Dakota farmer Alan Johnson bucked a trend 40 years ago and tried his hand at no-till. It made all the difference — as now his son Brian continues the no-till tradition along with cover crops and livestock on the farm today. In 2019, the Johnsons were named South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award winners — a prestigious award that recognizes excellence in land stewardship and conservation ethics.
A Deep Dive Into Cover Cropping
In this video from Post Harvest Technologies, dive into the history, benefits, challenges and current application methods of cover crops.
Cover Crop Utilization and Leasing Implications
