Salford Group knows cover crops. Salford’s Valmar 56 series seeders set the bar for versatility and accuracy in cover crop seeding. These machines accurately handle a wide variety of seed and blends, while pairing with virtually any implement to seed cover crops while performing other field operations. Salford has a variety of tillage implements that are suitable for seeding with the 56 series applicators. Some Salford tillage machines can be used for hay and pasture renovation, and others can be used to work in standing cover crops as green manure. New Cover Crop Shed In Sioux Center Draws Enthusiasts
Cover crop use and acceptance is expanding, based on this story about an agronomy center in Northwestern Iowa that takes cover crops seriously. The Farmer's Cooperative Center in Sioux City recorded 181,000 pounds of cover crop seed usage in 2015. The new shed begins operations this year, and the center is expecting growers to use up to 1.2 million pounds of cover crop seeds.
Cover Cropper, Strip-Tiller, Innovator: Brian Ryberg is at it Again
Brian Ryberg, the 2022 Strip-Till Innovator award winner, was featured in the New Ulm Journal for his innovative use of cover crops and strip till together. Ryberg is also a guest on this week's Cover Crop Strategies podcast.
Simulating Cover Crops with Wayne Fredericks
Wayne Fredericks walks through the finer points of financial planning and cover crops in this presentation from the 2022 National Cover Crop Summit. Fredericks goes through the Iowa Soybean Association's Cover Crop Economic Simulator to show how to plan possible outcomes for introducing cover crops in your field. While the ecological benefits of cover crops are well known, Fredericks and the simulator take you into the nickel-and-dime, nuts-and-bolts level of cover crops planning.
Cover Crop Redditors Discuss Tires, Crops and More
When a Redditor on the r/farming thread posted a photo of himself using a Great Plains drill to plant cover crops, he was immediately hit with questions. Why was he using the tires he was? What crop was he following? What is the average rainfall? It's the kind of discussion knowledgeable cover croppers can have about every aspect of cover cropping. We're looking for photos of seeding rigs for upcoming reporting. For a chance to see your rig on Cover Crop Strategies, email boconnor@lessitermedia.com
Beating Winter Wheat With Broadcast Rye Cover Crops
Up in Ontario, cover cropper Reuben Stone is using broadcast rye, seeded 4-5 weeks before harvest to boost his soybeans. That timeframe gives him an established cover crop when soybeans come off. Stone — a cover crop provider of daikon radish, vetch, pea and hemp seeds — says broadcast rye into standing soybeans shows improved equipment-carrying on his field, cleaner harvest and warmer soils at winter's onset. He also grazes cover crops for beef cows.
