Salford Group knows cover crops. Salford’s Valmar 56 series seeders set the bar for versatility and accuracy in cover crop seeding. These machines accurately handle a wide variety of seed and blends, while pairing with virtually any implement to seed cover crops while performing other field operations. Salford has a variety of tillage implements that are suitable for seeding with the 56 series applicators. Some Salford tillage machines can be used for hay and pasture renovation, and others can be used to work in standing cover crops as green manure. How Cover Crops are Helping Griggs Farms Survive a Drought
It’s been a tough summer at Griggs Farms. They’re in the middle of a 37-day drought, with limited to no rainfall since June. But the Volunteer State operation is holding strong, thanks in large part to their arsenal of cover crops. In this video, owner/operator Matt Griggs shows how covers are helping his cotton crop hold on and why he still believes there’s 100% yield potential.
Planting Cover Crops
The title says it all. Keep it simple with no talking and all planting in this 6-minute video from a small dairy operation in Northeast Wisconsin. This farmer takes us along for the ride as he seeds triticale, winter peas and field radish on a winter wheat field.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with Farmer Phill
With nearly 40,000 views and counting, this is one of most popular pieces of the week. The jovial “Farmer Phill” takes us through the process of planting a brassica mix with a grass harrow, following winter barley. Farmer Phill follows through on his promise to show “the good, the bad and the ugly” of his 400-acre operation in Ireland.
Roller-Crimping Cereal Rye in Michigan
Mark Vollmer decided to level up on cover crops after his soil organic matter checked in at 1.7 in 2019. Since then, he’s been using cereal rye on his organic farm in Caro, Michigan, for weed management and soil health improvement. Vollmer discusses the benefits and challenges of using a roller-crimper to terminate cereal rye ahead of soybeans.
Using a Drone to Plant Cover Crops
Over on the HowFarmsWork Youtube Channel, Andrew Tucker, a precision agronomist with Nutrien Ag Solutions, demonstrates how he uses an agriculture drone to plant nitro radish into no-till corn. The video was originally recorded in 2021, and Tucker says at the time he planned to roll the drone out more widely in 2022.
